This October, Shirley and I enjoyed an amazing tour through and around Zion National Park in Utah. We
drove through the park from east to west on rte 9, enjoying the long tunnel
cut through the rock as we went. Outside the park on the west, we took a
dirt road that traveled in and out of the park's western boundary as we
headed for Kolob Reservoir north of Zion. As we gained altitude, the
features of the canyons and mountains of the park became less and less
distinct. Eventually, we came out on a high grassy plateau that gave no hint
of the beautiful and scenic wonder just to the south and below. We traveled
north and slowly worked our way through stands of birch and aspen until we
finally came out high above the town of Big Cedar. From here, we descended
to rte 14 and headed east towards Long Valley Junction. It was on rte 14
that we gained the highest point during our vacation when we crossed over a
pass that was just under 10,000' of elevation.
